APRIL / MAY 2022

Finally the first Israel stays took place! Four students spent 2-3 weeks in Rehovot at the Weizmann Institute of Science and in Neot Smadar (in the Negev Desert) to conduct observations with the Large Array Survey Telescope (LAST).

FEBRUARY 2022

The PhD candidates selected at the end of 2021 have been interviewed. Two students have been selected and they will join the School later on this year.

 

JANUARY 2022

Even if the pandemic still restricts us to online meetings – we had fun at the MMS All-Hands meeting on January 11. We met for two hours and looked at upcoming events and discussed current issues as well as possible points of interaction for the upcoming year.

NOVEMBER 2021

On November 11 at the Cohort Meeting we welcomed the students who joined our School this year. In the morning Prof. Tim Dietrich from the University of Potsdam gave a talk entitled “Interpreting the nuclear physics -- multi-messenger astrophysics picture drawn by neutron star mergers”. The talk has been followed by an interesting discussion. In the afternoon students and supervisors visited the Jewish Museum in Berlin.

OCTOBER 2021

The application period to the Multimessenger School has started on October 1 and runs until November 7, 2021.

The next round of applications is just a few weeks ahead and we are gathering the information for new projects. Stay tuned!

 

AUGUST 2021

JULY 2021

The School participated to the International Cosmic Ray Conference 2021 (ICRC). Its programme has been presented to interested Master students. 

 

MAY 2021

The executive board decided for the school to associate with the Ruhr Universität Bochum (RUB), thanks to the cooperation with Anna Franckowiak who moved from DESY to Bochum.

 

APRIL 2021

On April 15 the school organised for its students a Mental Health Event. With a talk entitled “A Scientist´s Primer on Mental Health” Teresa Mayer, a volunteer from the non-profit global organisation Dragonfly Mental Health, highlighted the causes and consequences of mental health illnesses in academia. The talk was followed by a discussion that brought suggestions on how to prevent and manage such issues. 

 

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2021

The selection and admission process for the next round of MMS PhD candidates is completed. Over the course of the next months there will be 5 new PhDs joining the programme. In this round we also warmly welcome candidates from our newly established cooperation with ECAP and FAU. Welcome aboard!

 

JANUARY 2021

The executive board agreed to extend the existing cooperation with the Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics (ECAP) / Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) via Anna Nelles to also include Stefan Funk and Uli Katz as new PIs of the school.

 

DECEMBER 2020

On December 8 we held the welcome meeting for the second cohort. The new students received information about the school, its regulations and the partner institutions. Afterwards they spent some time together (virtually, of course). In addition, an online social event has been organised in the evening.

 

NOVEMBER 2020

The application round ended on November 8. Applications were reviewed by the PIs. The selection committee will meet in December to make the shortlist of candidates.

 

OCTOBER 2020

On October 1 the third application round opened. 

 

AUGUST 2020

Between the 25th and the 27th of August 2020 we held our Multimessenger School Annual Meeting. In order to comply with the security rules due to Covid-19 the meeting has been organised virtually.

JULY 2020

On July 2 we held our first Science Coffee with a discussion on SGR 1935. This seminar will take place from now on every 2 weeks on Thursday at 13h (CET). Click on the link on the right column of this page ("upcoming events") to see the schedule of the next seminars.

 

FEBRUARY 2020

After a second round of applications for the school in December 2019, interviews to select future candidates were held in Berlin in February 2020. Among 11 candidates, 5 have been choosen by the selection committee as next PhD students of the School.

 

OCTOBER 2019

Kick-off of the School

The International Helmholtz-Weizmann Graduate School for Multimessenger Astronomy was opened on the 28th of October 2019 with a festive ceremony in Israel. The program, in which the Israeli Weizmann Institute of Science, the Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Potsdam have joined forces with DESY, is funded by the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres with 1.8 million euros. The school will initially start with 17 doctoral students, eight of whom are currently at DESY and nine at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot. More information here.
